Cozumel, Mexico

We recently got back from Cozumel with Ben & Mindy and Ryan. It was a great child-free 10 day trip! Ryan's parents watched the girls for us and even though they didn't seem to miss us too much and it was a blast to be able to do things all day long and not worry about naps and bedtimes, it is very nice to have the home with us again.

At PDX waiting for our midnight flight to Houston

I made Ryan take a picture with me in front of this Texas cowboy boot...at about 5am! We were tired!

First breakfast in Cozumel at our resort

Don't be deceived...they may look innocent but it's miraculous that I even have a picture where they aren't ramming each other with the kayaks or trying to hit each other with the paddles

These mopeds were so fun! We had them for 24 hours and rode them all around the island

This picture was taken right before we jumped the fence back to our scooters since apparently we were on private land. Then the owner sicked his dog on Ben (he got away). It was freaky! I'm sure that dog had rabies!

This was an awesome little restaurant on the side of the road with the best Mexican lemonades

Best fajitas ever!

Wild iguanas run around everywhere! Some are huge!

At San Gervasio, the Mayan ruins on Cozumel that were dedicated to some fertility goddess

Garrett and Grow were really excited about these ruins! They kept on the whole rest of the trip about how much they wanted to go back and were even thinking of getting a lifetime membership pass :) Some people just cannot appreciate history! (Notice Ben in the background slapping the mosquitoes off his legs!)

Tree growing up through the middle of the ruins

In Cozumel downtown along the waterfront where all the tourist shops are

No, they aren't calmly building a sandcastle. This was the very beginning of a sand-throwing contest...everyone lost!

Our favorite beach...Playa Bonita. I'm not sure what the dark stuff was all over the beach (maybe some type of seaweed) but the sand was perfectly powdery white and the ocean was the clearest blue ever! We stayed here as long as possible...and we all got fried!

Hanging out in the lobby of our resort

Aren't they handsome!?

At a wonderful family-run restaurant that served us way too much food!

And again...wrestling

A neat sand crab that made friends with us during the FIRE SHOW! (I'll post a video of that as soon as I can get it download)

The ferry that took us over to the mainland

Going to Playa del Carmen on the ferry

MTN. DEW!!! I was so excited! And it was only 7am but I just had to have one!

When we landed at Playa del Carmen there was a bunch of equipment literally building a beach right next to the dock

The finished beach when we got back to the ferry dock

Our first rental car. Ben really wanted a convertible Jeep so we traded for one a little further down the road. What a mistake!! We couldn't hear each other talk because the road noise was so loud and we looked like we'd just walked out of a tornado after 2 1/2 hours driving. We put the top on for the drive back to the city.

These prices are in pesos but it was still a $22 toll road!!! How ridiculous!

We ate lunch at a little cafe at Chichen Itza. They didn't even know how to make half-way edible Mexican food...very disappointing

It kept raining off and on so I got a very fashionable poncho. No one else wanted to join my Smurf bandwagon but I was the only one with completely dry clothes when the sun finally started to shine.

The main temple at Chichen Itza. We didn't hire a guide so I can't tell you exactly what all these places are but I've wanted to go here to the capitol of the Mayan civilization since I was in 4th grade. It was very exciting!

The boys clapping in front of the temple. There is something to do with the 99 steps so if you clap at it then it will do this chirping echo back.

Those are skulls carved into the rocks

This is the game arena where teams would play some type of ball game and the winner was sacrificed to some god. What an honor!

A huge natural cenote (well). This was also a place for sacrifices; the Mayans would throw in valuable objects, children, virgins and warriors

Waiting for the ferry back to Cozumel

On our last full day we just stayed on the beach. It was a little chilly in the morning so I wrapped up in a towel and took a nap.

You could rent this pier in the evening and the resort would set up a table and serve you dinner out there. We never did it but it did look rather romantic

Our beach

Looking a little pink

I never did get just a good normal picture of all 3 of them

Watching the Super Bowl at the Houston airport. Go Saints!!

haha twila! no we didn't sample this particular beach. we'd been told about it but thank goodness it was a little cloudy that day so no one else was sampling it either!
